Types of waste management solutions we provide

MBT is a waste treatment process that combines mechanical sorting with biological treatment such as composting or anaerobic digestion. These technologies can recover valuable resources from waste streams, such as organic matter, metals, and plastics, while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. In Saudi Arabia, MBT could help divert waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and recover valuable resources from waste streams. According to the Saudi Arabian Environmental and Water Resources Management, the country generated 15.6 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2019, and only 5% of it was recycled. MBT could be an effective solution to increase the recycling rate in the country.

WTE technologies convert waste into energy, such as electricity or heat. These technologies include incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis, among others. WTE can be a valuable tool for reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and generating renewable energy. In Saudi Arabia, WTE could help reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and generate renewable energy. The Saudi government has set a goal to generate 9.5 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Implementing WTE technologies could help achieve this goal. However, it is important to note that WTE technologies can generate air pollution and require significant investments in infrastructure.

Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) technologies recover energy from waste by converting non-recyclable municipal solid waste into alternative fuels that can power cement kilns, waste-to-energy plants and industrial furnaces.

The RDF/SRF production process involves mechanically sorting, shredding and compressing waste to produce a fuel with a consistent composition and calorific value. This process is often combined with mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) systems that further segregate recyclables and organic waste from the fuel fraction.

Producing RDF/SRF from waste provides a sustainable alternative fuel source that can reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in industrial applications. RDF/SRF also enables diversion of waste from landfills, helping to meet Saudi Arabia's waste reduction and recycling targets.

Recycling involves converting waste materials into new products, while upcycling involves transforming waste materials into higher-value products. Recycling can help conserve resources, reduce the demand for virgin materials, and divert waste from landfills.

Upcycling involves taking waste materials and transforming them into products of higher value or quality. For example, old jeans can be upcycled into new clothing or furniture. In Saudi Arabia, recycling and upcycling could help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and conserve resources. However, the recycling rate in the country is currently low, at only 5%. To increase the recycling rate, the country needs to invest in better recycling infrastructure and increase public awareness and participation in recycling programs.

  • Advanced Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) that use artificial intelligence and automation to improve recycling rates (optical sorting systems, robotic sorting arms and AI-based algorithms can identify different materials with over 95% accuracy.)
  • Chemical recycling to break down plastic waste into its basic chemicals.
  • Anaerobic digestion of food waste to produce renewable biogas
  • Plasma gasification, Bioreactors that use microbes to break down hard-to-recycle waste, etc
